Tires are the only parts of your vehicle that come in direct contact with the road. This makes tire maintenance one of the most critical elements in car safety and performance. Proper tire care ensures your car handles well, performs efficiently, and remains safe on the road.

Tire Pressure: A Vital Component

Maintaining the correct tire pressure is the most important part of tire maintenance. Under-inflated tires have more surface contact with the road, which increases friction, reduces fuel efficiency, and causes faster tire wear. They are also more prone to overheating, which can lead to blowouts. Over-inflated tires, on the other hand, can make your car handle poorly and increase the risk of accidents on wet or slippery roads.

  • Check tire pressure monthly and before long trips. Use a reliable gauge to ensure the pressure is at the recommended level, typically listed on a sticker inside the driver’s door or in the car’s manual.
  • Cold tire pressure is most accurate in the morning before the tires have warmed up from driving.

Inspecting Your Tires

In addition to checking pressure, regularly inspect your tires for signs of damage or irregular wear. Look for punctures, cuts, and bulges, which could indicate a need for replacement. Uneven tread wear can also be a sign of alignment issues, suspension problems, or improper tire inflation.

  • Tire Tread Depth: You can check tread depth by using a tread depth gauge or the "penny test." Insert a penny into the tread, and if you can see the top of Lincoln"s head, it’s time to replace the tires.
  • Tire Rotation: Regular tire rotation ensures that all four tires wear evenly, improving their lifespan. Tire rotation should be done every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, or as recommended by your car’s manufacturer.

Wheel Alignment and Balancing

Misalignment or unbalanced tires can cause uneven tire wear, vibration, and poor handling. If you notice that your car pulls to one side or you feel vibrations while driving, it may be time to check your alignment. Correct alignment not only extends tire life but also enhances vehicle safety and comfort.
