For most drivers, shutting off the engine is an automatic action at the end of every trip. You arrive at your destination, twist the key or press the button, and walk away.
However, experts recommend that before turning off your car, there is one simple step you should always take: allow your vehicle to idle briefly to stabilize its systems.
Though it may sound unnecessary, this practice can protect the engine, extend the life of vital components, and ensure long-term reliability.
One of the key reasons behind this advice is turbocharged engines. Many modern vehicles are equipped with turbochargers to improve performance and fuel efficiency. Turbos spin at extremely high speeds and generate significant heat.
If the engine is switched off immediately after driving, the turbo may stop spinning while still very hot, causing oil trapped inside to burn and form deposits. Over time, this can damage the turbocharger.
Letting the engine idle for 30–60 seconds allows oil and coolant to circulate, cooling the turbo and preventing costly repairs.
Another important factor is air conditioning systems. When drivers turn off the engine right after heavy use of the air conditioner, moisture can accumulate in the evaporator core.
This creates the perfect environment for mold and unpleasant odors. Running the fan for a short time before switching off the car helps dry out the system, keeping the cabin air cleaner and healthier.
Idling briefly before shutting down also benefits the engine oil. During driving, oil is hot and circulating at high pressure. Allowing the engine to run for a short period helps return oil to its resting state, ensuring that critical parts are properly lubricated for the next startup.
Additionally, taking a moment before turning off your car provides an opportunity to check the dashboard warning lights. If any indicator remains lit, such as the check engine light or battery symbol, you’ll notice it before leaving the vehicle and can address the issue promptly.
