Driver Drowsiness Detection: Safety Promise or Risk Gap?

Heralded as a breakthrough in automotive safety, Driver Drowsiness Detection (DDD) systems represent the car industry"s technological attempt to combat one of the most insidious crash factors: driver fatigue. Using a combination of steering input analysis, lane-keeping behavior, and in some cases, infrared cameras monitoring the driver"s face, these systems promise to alert a fading driver before it"s too late. However, a dangerous gap exists between how these systems are perceived and their actual technical limitations. Overestimating their capability is, in itself, a safety risk.
