While you can’t avoid the increased fuel consumption entirely, there are several strategies you can adopt to reduce the impact when using the air conditioning in extreme heat.

1. Use the Air Conditioning Moderately

One of the simplest ways to reduce fuel consumption is by using the air conditioning moderately. Instead of blasting the AC at full power, try setting it at a moderate temperature that keeps you comfortable but doesn’t require the system to work at maximum capacity. Lowering the temperature just a few degrees can make a noticeable difference in fuel efficiency.

2. Use the Recirculation Mode

Many modern cars come with an air recirculation mode that recycles the air inside the cabin instead of bringing in hot outside air. When you switch to recirculation mode, the AC only cools the already-conditioned air inside, which requires less energy compared to cooling warm outside air. By using this mode, the air conditioning system works more efficiently, helping reduce fuel consumption.

3. Maintain the AC System Regularly

A well-maintained air conditioning system works more efficiently, thus consuming less fuel. Regularly cleaning or replacing the cabin air filter, checking the refrigerant levels, and ensuring that the compressor and other components are functioning properly can help the AC system run more efficiently. A clogged filter or low refrigerant can force the system to work harder, thereby consuming more fuel.

4. Avoid High-Speed Driving with the AC On

While it may seem counterintuitive, driving at high speeds with the AC running can significantly reduce fuel efficiency. The engine has to work harder to power the car at higher speeds, and the AC places additional strain on the system. At higher speeds, the effect of the AC on fuel consumption increases because of the higher aerodynamic drag on the vehicle. Therefore, if possible, maintain moderate speeds to minimize the fuel consumption caused by both the AC and the vehicle’s increased resistance.

5. Pre-cool the Car Before Driving

If you’re parked in the heat for an extended period, try pre-cooling the car before driving by briefly running the AC while the vehicle is still parked. This can help cool the cabin faster once you begin driving, reducing the need for heavy AC use while on the road. Additionally, opening the windows for a minute or two before turning on the AC can help expel the hot air from inside the car, making it easier for the AC to cool the interior.

6. Use the Window Option Wisely

While using the AC is the most common way to keep the cabin cool, opening the windows at lower speeds can also help ventilate the car. At lower speeds (around 30 to 40 mph), opening the windows may be a more fuel-efficient alternative to running the AC. However, driving at higher speeds with the windows down increases drag and may lead to higher fuel consumption. As a general rule, it’s best to use the AC when driving at higher speeds, and open the windows only during slower driving.

7. Park Smartly to Avoid Excessive Heat

Preventing your car from getting too hot in the first place can make a huge difference in fuel consumption. Try to park your car in shaded areas or use sunshades to block the sun from heating the interior. This will reduce the need to use the AC at full power when you get back into the car. Parking in the shade or using reflective covers for your windshield helps maintain a cooler cabin temperature, thus reducing the load on the AC system when you start driving.
